Though she be but little...

Horse stories

I have always had a soft spot for the horse story. I read all of Walter Farley’s books books as a kid. The Black Stallion. How I wished I could be Alec. The love between a horse and his boy (or girl for that matter). Powerfully moving.

So it should not surprise me that I’m already tearing up to the trailer for War Horse. In one scene, the commander tells his troops something so simple yet profoundly moving, “Be brave. Be brave.” Just before the battle. That’s it. And I’m in tears because there’s the brave horse running through the debris and gunfire, just trying to get home to his boy.

How I longed for a horse as a kid. Thankfully I was close friends with a family who had a ranch. I used to ride horses bare back, playing tag through orange groves with my friend Tracy. There is nothing better. Wind in your hair. The power beneath. Breaking free from the tree line and galloping through a field.

See you in the theater War Horse.
